Something of a Back to the Future for the young ones, Meet the Robinsons is a time travel tale of young orphan and keen scientist Lewis (voiced by Daniel Hansen, and later in production by Jordan Fry when the formers voice changed - oh the trials of puberty!) After Lewis' latest invention - which can retrieve old memories stored in the brain - is mysteriously sabotaged, a series of events will see him whisked away into the future by a young time traveller named Wilbur Robinson (Wesley Singerman). Once there, Lewis meets and falls in love with Wilbur's whacky family, all the while being stalked by a mysterious man in a bowler hat (Stephen J. Anderson) keen on destroying Lewis' life.
Meet the Robinsons is the first Disney film released under the Walt Disney Animations Studio title since their split with computer animation monster Pixar, and it is a very good debut production. Big, bright, and colourful, the film also features a number of memorable and quirky characters, with special mention to the loony Grandpa and the devious Bowler Hat Guy (both impressively voiced by director/co-writer Stephen J. Anderson), as well as a group of big band / gangster / Rat Pack-esque frogs.
Despite an extensive and reportedly troubled production - as well as a whopping 10 credited writers - Meet the Robinsons flows quite nicely after a slow start, and becomes quite the entertaining picture. The production design is great, with particular mention to a vision of rhe future which is spectacular in scope and a lot of fun with its travelling via bubbles and slippery dips.
To top off the film, a highly recommended message is spoken throughout, that revenge and anger will only bring destruction and stunt progress, so keep moving forward to brighter future. Good stuff indeed.
